Bharti Airtel's investment of US$300m in Abu Dhabi Group's Warid Telecom, has been approved by the telecom authority of Bangladesh.
Mentioning that the investment should be spent on the network expansion, a senior official of the telecom regulator said, "We've asked Warid to submit schedule of the Bharti's US$300mil initial investment plan within 30 days."
Warid the sixth mobile operator has invested US$600m, since 2007, after its launch of operations and its subscribers by November 2009 were 2.92 million subscribers.
The mobile sector of Bangladesh has been growing rapidly due to low penetration levels, competitive tariffs and growth in its economy. There subscribes have grown from 200,000 in 2001 to more than 51 million as of now and by the year 2011 it is expected to touch 70 millions, half of the country's population.
