Market research company DisplaySearch has reported that inspite of the recession hit economies, the global shipments of LCD TVs managed to grow in 2009, while also sharing the prediction that for 2010, the sales are set to rise year-over-year.
Flat-panel sets account for the majority of total TV sales, and the main reason behind the rise in sales has been the growing demand in China, where people are busy replacing their old CRT TVs. Also, huge price declines across Western Europe and North America have helped.
"The price declines are a strong influence on the robust demand, but are coming at the expense of profitability for many in the supply chain, especially at the brand and reseller level", DisplaySearch researcher Paul Gagnon said.
In 2009, as confirmed by the figures shared by the research firm, prices for most of the screen sizes recorded a 20-30% fall in 2009 compared to the previous year. Also, the overall average price of an LCD TV declined by 24%, which is two times the decline recorded for 2008.
For 2010, the shipment of LDC TVs is expected to reach about 171 million units, which is a 22% year-on-year rise.
For the complete year, overall TV shipments will reach 205 million units, a decline of 1% from 2008. Next year, shipments are expected to surge by 6% to 218 million units.
