Super Bowl XLVI sets new ‘tweet-per-second’ record for a sporting event

Super Bowl XLVI sets new ‘tweet-per-second’ record for a sporting eventThe 46th annual Super Bowl was a stupendous hit --- not just in terms of it being the most-watched program ever in television history, but also for giving the popular microblogging service Twitter a new ‘tweet-per-second (TPS)’ record for a sporting event!

According to reports, Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVI sporting event had an all-time-high of 12,233 tweets per second, with a total of 13.7 million game-linked tweets sent out during the broadcast of the match on NBC from 3 to 8 p. m. pacific time.

The tweets which were sent during this year’s Super Bowl – a game in which the New York Giants beating the New England Patriots by a final score of 21 to 17 - mostly had the Twitter users sharing their commentary on the match proceedings, as well as on Madonna's half-time performance, which had a sustained average of 8,000 TPS throughout it.

About the new TPS record of 12,333 tweets during the Super Bowl XLVI, Twitter said in a blog post on Monday that the spike in the tweets took place in the last three minutes of the match; with fans sending an average of 10,000 TPS in this short span.

Meanwhile, highlighting the new record in the wake of the earlier TPS figures for a sporting event, Twitter said that the biggest spike in TPS during the 2008 Super Bowl was “just 27;” while the same event last year had witnessed the Super Bowl fans peaking out at 4,064 tweets per second!
