US government, military to get secure Android phones

US government, military to get secure Android phonesAccording to the information shared by the people involved in the project pertaining to the deployment of smartphones to US government and military, some US officials will likely be given smartphones equipped with the capability of handling classified government documents over cellular networks.

Going by the details revealed by these sources, the handsets which the officials will get will run a customized version of the increasingly popular Google Android operating system. The modified Android version will be developed as part of an initiative which covers a number of federal agencies as well as government contractors.

As per the people familiar with the proceedings, it will be to the US military that the secure Android handsets will first be deployed; followed by federal agencies which will be handed out the handsets chiefly for the purpose sending and receiving government cables on the go. Finally, the employees of local governments and corporations will be given the phones with similar software.

Talking about the deployment of smartphones for the US military, Michael McCarthy - a director for the Army's Brigade Modernization Command - said in a telephonic interview that it has been for almost two years now that the military has been testing touchscreens devices at US bases.

Further revealing that nearly 40 phones were sent to fighters overseas a year back, and 50 more phones and 75 tablets will probably be shipped to soldiers abroad in March, McCarthy said: "We've had kind of an accelerated approval process. This is a hugely significant event."
