Foxconn resolves pay dispute with some workers in China

Foxconn resolves pay dispute with some workers in ChinaIn a Thursday statement, the world’s biggest contract electronics manufacturer Foxconn Technology said that its pay dispute with its employees at one of its central China plants has been resolved successfully and peacefully.

Foxconn said in its statement that even though the dispute had led 45 workers to submit their resignations, the negotiations worked out with the company and local government officials were satisfactory enough to bring the majority of the protesting workers back to work.

The settlement of the pay dispute by Foxconn – which is one of the leading suppliers to electronic biggies like Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft – has come after a large protest which had some workers of the company threatening to commit suicide. The workers have been protesting against their move from the Shenzhen facility to Wuhan; and the lower-than-promised pay package that they were being handed out at the Wuhan facility.

While Foxconn has revealed that nearly 150 workers out of the 32,000-strong staff at its Wuhan factory were involved in the protest, the company refrained from disclosing the details of the agreement which it has reached with the workers to resolve the dispute. However, it has been disclosed by an unnamed employee that the company had promised to give them additional compensation.

Meanwhile, noting that the welfare of the employees is a “top priority” at Foxconn, the company said in its Thursday statement that it is “committed to ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and that their rights are fully protected.”
