SOPA debate puts GoDaddy in trouble over domain transfers

SOPA debate puts GoDaddy in trouble over domain transfers According to theverge. com report, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) debate has put domain registrar GoDaddy in the thick of trouble over domain transfers, with the company facing accusations that it had, during the past few days, deliberately blocked domain transfers as it had embarked on its supposed SOPA opposition.

Introduced in October this year, by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), SOPA will reportedly help the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in easily obtaining an order which will enable the department to virtually get rid of Web sites that allegedly contain pirated content from the Internet.

In its recent customer service emails, GoDaddy's fellow domain registrar NameCheap accused GoDaddy of purposely blocking its WHOIS requests, thereby implying that WHOIS details have to be "manually" inserted into the forms of the customers who want to get their domains transferred from GoDaddy.

Later, in its follow-up post, NameCheap also mentioned that GoDaddy's return of "incomplete WHOIS information" amounts to a violation of the rules which have been laid down by ICANN.

Lashing out at GoDaddy for its measures aimed at blocking domain transfers, NameCheap said in its post: "It's a shame that GoDaddy feels they have to block their (former) customers from voting with their dollars. We can only guess that at GoDaddy, desperate times call for desperate measures."
