Mall of America partners with Google on Indoor Maps

Mall of America partners with Google on Indoor Maps In a move which marks a strategic expansion of Google's indoors mapping technology, the Internet search giant, in partnership with Mall of America (MOA), has recently announced a new project - the Google Maps for Android 6.0
- for the Android-powered handsets.

Revealing that the project chiefly underscores an `interactive' version of the maps on the MOA website or on the directories which have been listed in the mall, MOA's Lisa Grimm said that the new effort will enable the customers to "experience and explore things a bit differently than before."

Grimm also specified that the project only involved the mapping of MOA's common areas, and not the back hallways and other such places which are not meant for the public.

The Google indoor maps project will not require the installation of any additional equipment by the MOA. The location of an Android user in the mall will be indicated with a "blue dot"; and, going by Google's claims, the location will be precise to within several meters.

Other than MOA, Google's other retail launch partners for Google Maps for Android 6.0 - which is compatible with Android OS version 2.1 or higher - include IKEA, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, and Home Depot. Google will also have
18 airport partners at launch including airports in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle.

Noting that the project brings the map directory of a shopping mall, retail store, or airport, straight to the Android devices, Google's Steve Lee said: "Eventually, we'd like to reach all users in any public space."
