Singapore Unemployment Rate at 2.1 in Q2   Unemployment rate in Singapore was 2.1% for second quarter. Last quarter, it was 1.9%- a three year low.

Manpower Ministry stated that 22,800 jobs were created between Junes to April which resulted in the gradual fall of previous quarter.

This quarter’s high ratio is because of less job creation. Service sector alone had a steep drop of 7700 jobs i. e. jobs falling from 26,500 to 18,800 whereas manufacturing and construction sector showed considerate growth in job opportunities. Manufacturing sector added 1,300 jobs this year.

Manpower ministry claims that 81,300 residents were employed in the month of June when compared to 54,300 in March. The government has tightened the laws of employing the foreigners as the residents were complaining about the competition in the job market. Approximately 62,700 employees were unemployed in the month of June.

In response to the problem, the government has also tightened the immigration laws. The labor market is also easing on the grounds of tremendous growth previous year.

A survey revealed that 44% of employers have problem in filling in the vacancies with the person suitable for the job. The problem of unemployment is in fact the problem of mismatch of skill sets.
