No deal yet but intensifying talks as possible government shutdown looms

Discussions seem to be getting more intense on Capitol Hill after reaching an agreement on a long-overdue legislation for funding the government till September-end, and stop a government shutdown from taking place. Now, if or not a shutdown can be at all avoided in only three days' time is yet another issue.

A meeting took place at the White House on Tuesday which not only had the US President Barack Obama, but also the House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. The meeting was unsuccessful in producing the much looked forward to breakthrough, however, with a stopgap government financing cheque about to expire on Friday at midnight.

Later on, Obama made the pressure feel high, sounding exasperated with the Republicans for not having approved of a proposal made by the White House that was nearly similar to an earlier GOP framework suggested in the month of February. In this proposal, the Democrats propose reductions amounting to around $73 billion in savings less than Obama's initial requests — or $33 billion less than the present level of expenditure.
