UK's highest selling and most popular chocolate biscuit, Kit Kat, will carry a Fairtrade logo starting mid-January next year, and with the biscuits being awarded a Fairtrade certificate, over 6,000 farmers in Ivory Coast, West Africa, will now get a much better price for their cocoa.
Across Britain, over 1 billion Kit Kat biscuits are sold every year, and Nestle, the parent company, has pledged that it is committed to helping cocoa farmers. The Fairtrade logo already appears on as many as 4,500 products in UK and the campaigners are hoping many more to follow.
"The significant volumes of cocoa that go into making Kit Kat will open whole new possibilities for these farmers, giving them a more sustainable livelihood and the chance to plan for a better future", said Harriet Lamb, of the Fairtrade Foundation, while stressing that with the development cocoa farmers will be receiving an estimated thousands of Pounds more starting next year.
For over 15 years now, Fairtrade campaign is committed to offering farmers in developing nations a better price for their produce. UK's best selling chocolate bar, Cadbury's Dairy Milk, was awarded the Fairtrade certificate in March this year.
