Member of the Meena Gupta Committee refused to accept the balked Posco report

posco steelOn Tuesday the members of the Meena Gupta committee started pressurizing the government to accept their opinions. Earlier these members of the committee voiced their arguments for the cancellation of clearances of the Posco Steel project in the state of Orissa.

Devendra Pandey, former director of the Forest Survey of India, V Suresh the advocate and forest rights activist and Urmila Pingle, the tribal affairs expert are the three members of the committee who have given their opinions on the minority report that has been submitted by the former environment secretary and chairperson of the panel, Meena Gupta.

They have pointed out to the environment minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh that the report submitted by the chairperson does not comply with the law on some of the points.

Mr. Ramesh could sense on Monday that the panel members have intentions of pressurizing the government with the matter and he promptly issued a gag order

If the development of Tuesday somehow gets its ground then the anti-Posco lobby will get their support.

According to these three members there are differences regarding the approach of the two reports that were submitted. They pointed out that Meena Gupta has asked for an environmental impact assessment without canceling the clearance which is unreasonable.

They pointed out that as per the law environmental impact assessment has to be done in public and should be probed by all authorities. Prior to public hearing if there isn't any impact assessment report then clearance should not be given.

They further added that Meena Gupta in her report had denied the power of the gram sabha by not giving permission of forest diversion which is unjustified and not in accordance with the law. They further stated that this kind of action can give people chances of manipulation.
