A shocking new study has revealed that brain disorders may be almost commonplace among people who are infected with HIV which is a virus that leads to AIDS.
This means that one quarter of HIV-positive patients who participated in a 10-year long Alberta study were found to be suffering from neurological disorders as per reports given by Dr. Chris Power.
Dr Power is a neurology professor at the University of Calgary, Canada. The percentage of middle-aged Canadians who suffer from neurological disorders is only five percent.
Dr Power is also the Canada Research Chair in Neurological Infection and Immunity. He said that the same patients who suffer from brain disorders also face double the risk of death as compared to HIV sufferers without neurological diseases.
Power said, “We were very surprised with these results, and what a common problem this is. It has a really negative impact on the quality of life of these patients . . . their ability to hold down a job, their economic and social capacities.”
The study was published in the September 28 issue of the international journal Neurology and the study covered 1,651 people suffering from HIV. These people were treated at the Southern Alberta Clinic in Calgary between 1998 and 2008.
