The Indian government has asked the telecom operators in the country to provide access to messages sent on BlackBerry phones to security agencies for monitoring.
The India laws makes the telecom operators responsible for ensuring security agencies access to BlackBerry services for monitoring. The government last month gave an extended 60 days period as a reprieve from a possible ban to BlackBerry maker, RIM after it agreed to provide lawful access.
The Department of Telecommunications has asked the telecom operators to submit a compliance report by Wednesday to prove that their infrastructure allows security agencies to monitor BlackBerry data.
It is not known what changes the operators will have to make to allow security agencies monitor communication on the smartphones. The government has said that it will soon decide the date for operators to show their monitoring mechanism working.
The government is concerned that that the highly encrypted data could be used by terrorists and anti social elements to carry out dangerous activities.
RIM has said that it is holding discussions with the Indian government over security concerns about BlackBerry's messaging services and believes that progress has been made.
