Government plans to rent out PCs in rural areas to increase IT awareness In order to improve awareness in the areas of Information Technology (IT) in rural parts of India, the government is planning to launch a new pilot program to rent out PCs to citizens for about Rs. 15 a day.

The government is reportedly in talks with Intel, HCL Infosystems and OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) Project to launch the scheme in the country.

The pilot program initiated by the ministry of IT & communications will include computers specially built for rural areas deployed in five locations before they are rented to the citizens.

The new programme will eliminate the affordability factor as the computers will be available for 15-20 per day. The government will spend about 45 lakh on the initiative which will also remove the problem of maintenance and repair and also the users can only rent the computer when the power is available.

In another initiative, the government has recently announced that will make available a touch screen $35 computer tablet called Sakshat for the school and university students in the country by next year. The government will acquire 100,000 units in the first phase and a lot them to the students in the country.
