Facebook overtakes Orkut in India, report Leading global social networking Site, Facebook has surpassed rival, Orkut which was leading in some countries including India, to reach the top position in the country, according to a report from market research company comScore.

Facebook recorded 20.9 million visitors in July with a growth of 179 percent on a year-on-year basis while Google, Orkut recorded 19.9 million visitors in the month with a growth of just 16 percent.

Micro blogging site, Twitter has grown 233 percent in the period. Overall the Internet users visiting social networking site grew 43 percent year-on-year. The country has emerged as the seventh largest social networking market after U. S., China, Germany, Russia, Brazil and the UK.

Ina new trend various Indian web portals link themselves with Facebook and Twitter to get popularize. Orkut has been a leader in India for some years while Facebook has been growing at much faster pace in the country.

comScore executive Will Hodgman said in a statement, "The social networking phenomenon continues to gain steam worldwide, and India represents one of the fastest growing markets at the moment."

Meanwhile, Indian online monitor ViziSense has also shown similar results. ViziSense estimates show that Facebook had overtaken Orkut in April. According to the its data, Facebook reported 19 million unique users in May while Orkut had about 18 million.
