A recent research has revealed that two popular prescription drugs for breast cancer, Fulvestrant and Raloxifene, have been able to effectively fight cervical cancer in laboratory mice. Although it remains to be seen if the study can be extended to humans, this is being considered as a much valuable find.
In addition to fighting cervical cancer, these medicines were also successful in clearing pre-cancerous tumors in the cervix and vagina. Pre-cancerous growths in mice were snubbed from turning into cancer as well.
For the sake of research, the aforementioned breast cancer drugs, were administered to laboratory mice who were genetically engineered to carry HPV16, an agent strongly linked with cervical cancer. Both the medicines, which are marketed to women as Faslodex (Fulvestrant) and Evista (Raloxifene), help prevent estrogen from working in cells, thus curbing the growth.
The detailed study will be published in the week's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. If the laboratory studies are successful, these could be, as confirmed by the researchers, followed by some quick clinical trials and be developed into something that can help prevent tons of cervical cancers across the world.
