Two Websites Blocked from Selling Beatles Songs

A ruling by a Federal judge has temporarily stopped two online music sharing sites from selling songs by the Beatles, among other artists, for 25 cents per song. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge John F. Walter, ruled that BlueBeat.com and Basebeat.com should stop selling copyrighted songs from various artists.

The ruling has come as a result of a suit filed by the EMI Music Group stating that the sites were selling copyrighted songs.

According to claims made by EMI, the aforementioned websites have infringed on its copyrights to songs by various artists including The Beatles, Coldplay and The Beach Boys, among others. As per the complaint, the sites were selling the recently released The Beatles catalog, which has been digitally remastered, for 25 cents a songs, whereas the retail price of the box set of 13 albums is $250.

In its defense, the company has claimed that it is not selling the copyrighted originals, but altered versions of the songs. EMI is now, in addition to the temporary halt of sales, demanding a permanent ban and a fine of up-to $150,000 per downloaded song against owner of the sites, Hank Risan.
