On Monday Gov Bobby Jindal’s office reported that the Oil major BP PLC is shelling out fifteen million dollars to the health department of the state of Louisiana to treat people suffering from anxiety and stress caused by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The governor’s office stated that the money will be spent on counseling, outreach, support services medication and clinical visits.
Six decimal six million dollars will be given to Catholic charities and NGOs who will spend the amount on services. The remaining amount will be spent on services from the state and through district’s regional human services.
Mr. Bobby Jindal praised BP for the money and said that it can help the state for outreaching and giving therapeutic services for at least six months. He had asked for twenty eight million dollars initially to provide services for thirteen months.
US Sen. Mary Landrieu of New Orleans termed the money as a down payment required to fight stress, anxiety and depression that people might face in the post traumatic situation.
A further twelve million dollars will be given to Mississippi by BP as stated by the oil major on Monday.
Assessments of mental health of the residents of Louisiana following the spill, is being carried out by the New Orleans based LSU Health Sciences Center, at present.
Department of psychiatry of the medical school has a state grant for taking interview of fifteen thousand adults ,some in person, some over telephone in districts of Plaquemines, Lafourche, Terrebonne parishes and St. Bernard.
Fishermen resumed their work on Monday, after spending almost whole of the summer mopping up oil from the spill.
They got back to work since the fall shrimping season in the coastal waters of Louisiana started from Monday with apprehension of the catch getting tainted by the crude oil or the catch even if clean will be bought by people.
