Retailers saw a very dull week so far but they expect the market will be better on the coming Saturday and Sunday as six decimal two five percent of sales tax levied by the state will be suspended from most of the items.
Cash book of many retail counter did not witness much transaction in recent days with consumers speculating about their wants .Consumers all through the week did not go for major purchases as they saved money for the weekend to avail the tax benefits.
According to the Retailers Association of Massachusetts sales will amount to five hundred million dollars in the weekend statewide. According to them the sales tax holiday will definitely boost up the business at the sluggish time of the year
Almost all kinds of retailers including appliance chains, flooring, carpet sellers, and piano stores are putting up ads well in advance of the tax reprieve. Many of them are offering additional discount to lure customers. Stores which sell more costly items such as furniture, jewelry, electronics and appliances will get more benefits.
According to Mike Tesler one of the partners in Retail Concepts, a retail consulting firm from Norwell, people won’t throng in shops selling twenty dollar items. They will opt for expensive items where they can get the value of the discount.
Tax holiday first came into effect in the year of 2004 and since then it happened in every summer barring last year when due to the economic crisis the state decided not to bring it into effect
The state will see a reduction of twenty to twenty three million dollars in its tax collection because of the tax free weekend in this year.
According to the co-owner of Rotmans Furniture & Carpet in Worcester Mr. Bernie Rotsman their last year August sale was very dull as the tax holiday was called off but this year on top of six decimal two percent off on sales tax they will give an additional same amount discount on products and take full advantage of the tax suspension and make more profits.
