Google and Verizon have released a joint policy proposal for an open Internet, relating to the wider debate over "network neutrality".
The proposal advocated keeping an open internet while allowing broadband service providers to create their own premium services. The proposal does not have any legal implications and is for consideration by the Congress and the Federal Communications Commission.
Various intern users have criticized the proposal and say that it is actually against open internet. The debate over network neutrality is that weather service providers should be allowed to prioritize certain traffic over others.
The supports of neutrality say carriers should not be allowed to allow some data to flow quicker than other while opponents say that it restricts carriers from fully exploiting the infrastructure they have created and will discourage investment.
The "Verizon-Google Legislative Framework Proposal" components were expected largely from carrier Version but Google advocating these changes have disappointed some inter users because the search giant has been a supporter of network neutrality.
An expert from the statement read, service providers "would be prohibited from engaging in undue discrimination against any lawful Internet content, application, or service in a manner that causes meaningful harm to competition or to users."
It also requires the service providers to clearly outline the characteristics and capabilities of their offerings allowing users to make informed decisions. The users are concerned over the statement asking for exemption for "additional online services" and a provision that would totally exempt wireless broadband.
Google is now a major player in the mobile business with Android based phones and Verizon is nation's largest mobile carrier. The proposal does have a backing from the large organizations but it still a proposal and the policy will only be formed by the government.
