With the emergence of tablet and mobile devices like laptops, notebooks and netbook etc. globally on the rise, the desktop seems fast to become a passé. Even in India, computer-users are fast trading their desktops for mobile computing devices which enable them to carry their work and data and digital belongings with them anywhere they go.
Proof regarding this can be seen in the fast increasing sales figures of mobile computing devices, especially laptops, which have gone up 65 percent during 2009-2010, as compared to the old desktop's sales figures of five per cent growth.
A survey by India's Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT), a hardware companies' consortium shows that about 80.3 lakh computers were sold, out of which 55 lakh units were desktops whereas twenty-five lakh units were notebooks or netbooks.
The survey also demonstrated that it was mainly the household segment which contributed to the growth of sales of notebooks and laptops.
The household segment usually accounts for 56 percent of the total sales. Even the business and corporate houses and companies seem to prefer mobile PCs over the desktops.
