After demolishing an old wall between Byculla and Sandhurst stations, railway services on Sunday were disrupted. This was after Central Railway found a crack developing in the wall on Sunday morning.
The cracks were noticed by staff close to the slow line around 6 am in the morning after it was raining for a whole week. The wall was demolished as they didn't want to take any extra risk, according to CR chief spokesperson Sriniwas Mudgerikar. By undertaking a mega block with 200 engineering staff being pressed into service, 10 meters of the wall has been removed. Train services on the slow line have been delayed for more than half an hour.
Railways traffic which was delayed due to rain, sturdy structure of the wall and illegal constructions was diverted to the fast lane until work got over in the evening. Although routine mega block on the CR main line was cancelled the work for the mega block of harbor line was continued. Due to the repair work, services on the Down slow line towards Thane between Byculla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus had come to a standstill. Due to this the commuters too faced a problem as they had to go all the way up to Bycullar and then take the slow Up train, thus taking one hour from Kurla and Sandhurst road. According to Sachin Mali, a local resident, they had to evacuate forced because a portion of the wall collapsed.
Most of the residents are blaming the railway's slack attitude which had received warnings from the residents about the developing cracks as early as November last year. None of the building's 20 tenants were injured though.
