U.S. News Best Hospitals release rankings

U.S. News Best Hospitals release rankingsU. S News Best Hospitals released its annual rankings in 16 specialities, from cancer to orthopaedics and urology. Tampa General Hospital, All Children’s hospital in St. Peters burg and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Centre & Research Institute in Tampa were some of the proud hospitals that made it into this year’s list.

For 21 years U. S. News Best Hospitals has been rating hospitals with stringent rules and have stayed true to their mission of guiding patients who need high level of hospital expertise.

For a hospital to be considered in any of the specialities it had to meet at least one of the four criteria. The criteria were that the hospital had to be a teaching hospital or must be affiliated with a medical school, or at least have 200 beds. The hospital had to meet these or at least have 100 beds and have four or more types of medical technology such as a MRI scanner and other radiation therapies.

For the year 2010-2011 they ranked hospitals in 16 specialities and statistics of 4,852 hospitals were collected and analyzed. Certain facilities like prison hospitals and military installations were not considered due to lack of sufficient data, small number of beds, or various other reasons that had made the task pointless.

Tampa General’s statistics put them in 25th position in orthopaedics, 31st in diabetics and endocrinology. They were placed no. 32 in geriatrics, No. 35 in urology, No. 36 in heart and heart surgery and No. 50 in kidney disorders.

After the review the hospitals in U. S received a score on four elements. The four elements were reputation, death rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services.

Tampa General President and chief executive, Ron Hytoff has expressed joy and has commended the teamwork that exists between the hospital staff, University of South Florida College of Medicine and community medical providers.
