Primary school infrastructure improved by Singapore
Singapore

With the aim of enhancing primary school infrastructure, a sum of 560 million Singapore dollars (396.6 million U. S. dollars) would be spent by the Singapore government. From November 2009, the country's Ministry of Education will commence the construction of 11 new primary schools, along with upgrading additional 28 existing schools.

This comes as the first phase of the ministry's plans to upgrade primary school infrastructure, in order to facilitate the transition of primary schools to a single session by
2016. As per plans by the government, a total of 18 new schools would be built, apart from enhancing nearly 80 existing ones in phases.

"With a single session, schools will be able to provide greater flexibility in time and space for teachers to deliver a more holistic education to their pupils. Pupils will be able to benefit from a wider range of academic and non-academic activities that will nurture life skills and develop their character," specified the ministry.

Ang Mo Kio, Bendemeer, Blangah Rise, Chongfu, Compassvale, Evergreen, Farrer Park, Jurong West, Mee Toh, Nan Chiau, Paya Lebar Methodist Girls', Queenstown, Radin Mas, Rivervale, Sembawang, Seng Kang, Woodlands Ring and Zhangde primary schools, are the ones which will become operational either in 2010 or 2011.

CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) which will function from the previous Victoria School at Geylang Bahru Lane; De La Salle School which will move temporarily to the former Teck Whye School at Teck Whye Crescent; and Kong Hwa School that operate at the former Macpherson Secondary School at Circuit Road, are the only three schools, which will be relocated during the improvement works.

While Kong Hwa School will shift premises from 2010 till 2011, the remaining two will operate from their temporary sites from January 2011 to December 2012.
