As a reply to the world-wide speculations rumoring that Carrefour is “offloading” its assets in South Asia for around US$1 billion, the French giant, Carrefour, said that it is not selling neither of its outlets in Malaysia, Singapore, or in Thailand. This reply came on the heels of the launching of Carrefour’s four hypermarkets in Malaysia, with plans to open another four by the end of this year in Malaysia as well.
The speculations rooted out of the fact that the French Company had directed its resources to serve the key European markets in France, Spain, Italy and Belgium and it would have made perfect sense to the public, if Carrefour let go of its South Asian stores, since they are not on the high priority list markets for this Company.
The Bangkok Post daily even reported that Carrefour communicated potential buyers and that the British supermarket chain Tesco was the one expressing utmost interest in purchasing Carrefour's stores in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
Analysts justified the rumors by saying that markets in France alone stand for almost half of the Company's annual income and the fast-growing China, Brazil, and Indonesia stores have also been added to the main branches of the Company.
