Foreign Workers to be limited by Singapore
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

Due to the world economic crisis that hit the country, the Singaporean government plans to limit the number of foreign workers.

Most of the Singapore residents are descendants from Chinese, Indian, and Indonesian families.

Singaporean Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong yesterday (16/9) when giving a speech at Nanyang Technological University, said: "We will hire no more."

It was reported that Lee wanted to avert a major economic slowdown that happened several years ago.

During that period, nearly 100,000 foreign workers came to Singapore every year; while presently there are around one million foreign workers in Singapore.

Due to this, temporary and permanent foreign residents' number in Singapore has reached 4.84 million, comprising 35% of total citizens.

Lee explained that in the long-term, Singapore required foreign and migrant workers to do jobs that are not popular with Singaporeans.

"Singaporean economic growth in 2008 has been moving slower to only 1.1 percent. This is much lower than economic growth between 2004 and 2007 that reached 8.2 percent. The unemployment rate is also at its highest level in the last five years," said a source.
