Meeting between Malaysia, Indonesia ministers to ease tensions
Anifah Aman

On Wednesday, the local media reported that on Thursday, Malaysia's Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman will meet his Indonesian counterpart in Jakarta, with the aim to talk about the mounting tensions between the two countries.

According to a report in a well-known newspaper, the aim of Anifah Aman's one-day trip to Jakarta is to lessen the negative opinion some Indonesians have of Malaysia, even though he called it as "a normal sort of meeting".

Anifah Aman gave no fixed agenda for the meeting; however, he said it is good to talk about ways to ease the situation which has emerged in Indonesia.

The tense atmosphere between the two countries resulted from a slip-up on the part of the Discovery Channel, which mistook a Balinese pendet for a Malaysian dance.

The Indonesians blamed Malaysia of stealing their pendet and their unique culture; and carried out protests in Indonesia.

A source said close to the matter: "It all began over claims by these people that Malaysia has stolen the Balinese traditional pendet dance. They have been quick to accuse Malaysia of impropriety when a little research would have established that the dance was featured in a Discovery documentary early this month. It was not Malaysia's fault at all."
