Singapore will Use more Desalinated and NEWater

In order to become self sufficient in its water supply, Singapore will considerably ramp up its desalination and NEWater capacity in the next 50 years.

The country’s water demand is expected to become double from 380 million gallons per day, over the next half century.

The increased demand is likely to be met by the improved production of the reclaimed use of NEWater and desalinated water.

Presently, desalinated water and NEWater are two forms of water used to meet only 40 % of the country's water requirements.

National water agency PUB announced on Monday at the Singapore International Water Week conference that it is planning to raise this ratio to 80 % by 2060.

Two other sources of water in Singapore are the catchment areas like reservoirs and imported water from Malaysia.

The force to produce more NEWater and desalinated water will make Singapore more self-sufficient in water by 2061, when its water contract with Malaysia will expire.

Another water agreement was signed in 1961 to let Singapore to acquire water from its neighbor at 3 Sen per 1,000 gallons will be expired next year and is not being renewed.

The PUB will also enhance water catchment of Singapore from the present two third of land region to a whopping 90 %.
