Singapore Gets Awards for Water Conservation

The winners of the 2010 International Water Association's (IWA) Asia Pacific Regional Project Innovation Awards in the Design and Applied Research have been declared and they will make everyone in Singapore very happy. Two of the country’s plants including Marina Barrage and Variable Salinity Plant have emerged as the winners.

Singapore does not have any source for natural water and very little area to collect groundwater. It has developed estuarine reservoirs by building dams on its rivers. It has built three reservoirs including Marina Reservoir and the newly built, Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs.

Most of the rivers in Singapore have already been controlled by dams and in the coming times Singapore wants to collect every single drop of rain water. It has already started taking steps to achieve this and has also developed a technology called the Variable Salinity Plant. Climate experts are confident that these steps will help the country to better manage its water resources in the coming times.

These steps are also expected to benefit the environment considerably. This has also received praise from environment and conservation experts across the world. The example of Singapore is cited by most of them to encourage other countries to take similar steps to protect and conserve environment.

These awards will be presented during Singapore International Water Week on 30 June 2010.
