Early Exposure to Cow's Milk has Benefits: Study

cow-milkIt has been suggested by a new study that if a child is provided with cow’s milk in the first few weeks of birth, later, it will protect him from developing an allergy to the milk's protein.

Cow's milk protein allergic reaction is the most general and dangerous among the family of dairy allergies and intolerances. The protein reaction can also lead to rashes, gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms, even shock or death.

This unexpected research was led by Dr. Yitzhak Katz of Tel Aviv University in Israel. According to him, the findings came as s surprise, which says that giving cow's milk very early in life, might increase tolerance.

Dr. Yitzhak and his colleagues simply conducted the study to improve the present estimates of the number of kids with the protein allergy and to verify how often it is accompanied by an allergic reaction to soy.

Total 13,000 infants were examined after which the team found that 66 were tested positive, which means only 0.5% infants had milk allergy. The percentage is very less as expected, comparing with previous population estimates of 1 to 3%.

The researchers also found no linkage between and soy allergies and cow’s milk. "Soy is a reasonable feeding alternative for children with cow's milk allergy", said Katz.
