The news of the presence of the H1N1 virus in live pigs from Indonesia has affected sales of pork in Singapore. Authorities have cleared that the deadly virus is not transmitted by eating pork but still people are not pacified.
Sales of pork kept on falling despite assurance by Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) that infected pork is safe to eat if cooked properly but it seems that people are scared of the havoc caused by H1N1 flu virus worldwide.
The sale of pork is usually high at this time of year as Chinese celebrate the seventh lunar month in which pork is offered to the hungry ghosts. But people are staying away from pork leading to 30 to 40 percent fall in pork business.
People are opting for fish and chicken now. It is believed that the slump in pork sales will continue for the month.
