Malaysian government keen to study Obama’s policies before taking any stance on FTA

The Malaysian government has decided upon to review the policies that will be put forth by the new President elect Barack Obama and then to take upon any further steps regarding the halted Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks with the United States.

The Finance Minister of the country Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has opined to study the proposed policies by the President elect of U.S. saying on an optimistic note that the Democratic party that has taken the lead now in the U.S. is “more protectionist.”

Najib who is also the Deputy Prime Minister of the country commented, “Let us wait and see. But I do hope the new US administration will see that what the world needs is not more assistance, but a fair and justrade regime”, on being asked about whether the FTA talks will be resumed when the new President comes to power in January.

The FTA talks that ceased this January was in its seventh round after taking off in March 2006. The government had emphasized that the round of talks taking place should not be solely confined to the Malaysian interests and its policies and neither to any time frame.

Emphasis was also made on the developing a sound financial system worldwide where alterations are required taking into concern the global situation by the Finance Minister but however he added a global consensus is required for the same.
