Following the proposals of Ofcom to crackdown illegal file sharing, the plan has been condemned by BT.
Reports claim that BT is upset at Ofcom over the plan of the regulator to crackdown the illegal file sharing. Criticizing the plan, BT argued that the larger internet service providers (ISPs) were being put at a disadvantage with the move.
In an aim to tackle the menace of illegal file sharing, Ofcom announced that it would be mandatory for the ISPs across the UK to keep a detailed list of the internet users that regularly broke the copyright laws.
It is believed that the telecommunications watchdog would create a draft code of practice for the ISPs. The draft would also include over 400,000 subscribers, including Sky, the Post Office, Talk Talk, Orange, O2, Virgin Media and BT, who would abide by the same.
As per the new code of practice, only the fixed-line ISPs with more than 400,000 users would be covered, however there is a huge possibility that the illegal file sharers would switch to smaller ones.
This would put the big ISP’s in a disadvantageous position.
Responding to the queries of BT, Ofcom has claimed that it would review the issue in case the same happens. It is believed that with the implementation of the rule, BT fears that the market would rapidly skew.
