Two Suspected Skin Cancer Cases Discovered in Province House

On Wednesday, as many as two suspected cases of skin cancer and some pre-cancerous lesions were discovered during a clinic that was set up in Province House.

Of the 40 MLAs and staff put under screening, there was one suspected case of the squamous cell skin cancer, one of basal cell skin cancer, as many as three pre-cancerous lesions and four people were discovered as having some suspicious moles.

Each person discovered with a condition has now been referred to his/her family doctor.

The clinic was set up in order to raise awareness about the importance of early skin cancer detection, and also to make people aware about the need to undergo regular checkups.

Dr. Richard Langley, a Halifax dermatologist, has shared that skin cancer is the most common cancer form, so it was expected that some suspected cases would be discovered.

"The reality is, it doesn’t surprise me because I see skin cancers on a daily basis in my office as a dermatologist. I see serious skin cancers like melanoma on a weekly basis. And clearly, they’re increasing", he said.

The doctor further shared that while pre-cancerous lesions, also called "sun spots" can be treated with the help of liquid nitrogen or a cream, surgery could be required for squamous cell and basal cell cancers.
