The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has given its nod to JAL for reinstating fuel surcharge on international flights from October 1, 2009. The fuel surcharge was dropped earlier this year due to decline in fuel prices below US$60.00 per barrel.
Now, JAL has announced the resumption of fuel surcharge over tickets issued during the October-December period, based on the average US$71.41 per barrel of Singapore kerosene, which will be around 300 yen on a Japan-Korea ticket, and 10,000 yen on a Japan-Brazil ticket per person.
Surcharge over tickets issued between January and March 2010 will be reviewed after assessing fuel prices during the period.
Sources said that a surcharge of $39 each way will be added for flights between Japan and Hawaii, under the proposed scheme. However, the company may have to face reservation from international passengers over increased prices of tickets.
JAL had introduced the surcharges in February 2005, but rolled back decision earlier this year due to significant decline in international price of crude oil under the impact of global slowdown.
