Increase in Spinal Injury Cases in NT

Increase in Spinal Injury Cases in NTAccording to a new report, which documented Australian spinal injuries between 2006 and 2008, reveal that Territorians are two times as likely to hurt their spines as compared to the average Australian.

Northern Territory is witnessing the highest rate of spinal injuries in the country, due to road accidents caused by young male motorcyclists. Men tend to injure their spines more, as compared to women.

Lynda Norton, the author of the report says, "That's part of the risk taking behaviour I think. I mean 84 per cent of the traumatic cord spinal injuries were male".

About 362 road accident cases occurred in 2007-08, indicate the figures unveiled by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Other important contributions to injuries included diving, surfing, swimming or jumping into water bodies. 81 cases of spinal cord injury were due to falls. Trailbike, motorcross racing, bicycle racing and horse riding also contributed to such injuries.
