Activists of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are reported to initiate a campaign, urging people in Tamil Nadu to stop the habit of eating fish.
The fish are a revealed to pose a threat to human health for it is full of chemical toxins.
India's third place in the global fishing sector with a production of 64 lakh tonnes in 2008-09, makes for interesting statistics, but the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) would like the fishing sector to take a more compassionate approach to fish.
However, the organization, is not calling out for a ban on fishing.
PeTA officials posted that that a comprehensive report it had issued clearly emphasized on large scale pollution of water bodies and "routine" violation of environmental protection laws, and that sport fishing, commercial fishing and fish farming also triggered concerns.
The organization is reported to calling for government's involvement, seeking its help in putting an end to bottom trawling of the sea floor, and to improve hygiene at fish markets across the country.
The data depicts that marine products export from Kerala in 2008-09 as 1.01 lakh tonnes, outlining a rise of 0.68% over the previous year, and valued at Rs 1,570 crore, constituting 16.7% in terms of volume and 18.1% in terms of value of the national marine products exports.
