JAL to Maintain Oneworld Alliance with American, Closes Talks with Delta, Report

A recent report by a local newspaper has speculated that the troubled Japan Airlines Corp. will be maintaining its partnership with American Airlines in the Oneworld alliance, while ending talks with Delta Airlines and rival SkyTeam group.

Delta, American Airlines Offers to be Declined by JAL

Reports have speculated that the struggling Japan Airlines Corp. and the Government-backed body responsible for the money-losing carrier's restructuring will be declining additional fund offers from Delta and American Airlines.

Instead, JAL and the funds providing body will only be seeking a bigger business cooperation with either Delta Air Lines Inc. or American Airlines, and the turn-around body will be picking one of the American operators as JAL's partner after February ends.

$1.1 Billion Offered to JAL by AA and TPG

As confirmed by the international US carrier, American Airlines and TPG, the private equity firm, on Thursday jointly offered to inject funds worth as much as $1.1 Billion into the struggling Japan Airlines.

At a press conference in Tokyo, the American airlines operator shared that its total investment in the Japanese carrier, however, would be over $1.8 Billion, taking into account the financial assistance and the subsequent revenues that the funds injected would generate.

Japan's struggling carrier, Japan Airlines Corp., on Monday urged retirees and employees to accept an average 40% reduction in their pension payout, a move crucial to the airline's survival, and failure of which will result in JAL filing for bankruptcy.

In May this year, JAL President Haruka Nishimatsu had sent out a plea to the carrier's pension fund to cut payments by over 50%, with the aim to balance pension shortfalls of an estimated 330 Billion Yen ($3.7 Billion) which were recorded for March.

Japan Airlines Looking at Possible Restructuring - Reports

According to reports released on Sunday, Japan Airlines (JAL), currently going through tough times, is looking at possible restructuring.

Sometime this week, the Japanese Government will be announcing a turnaround plan for Japan's international airline.

While, according to Japan's local media reports, the restructuring will happen under the support of the state-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp. of Japan, an act which might breathe life back into a failing carrier, the Government is looking at a special law which will require the airline to cut its high pension payouts.

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has given its nod to JAL for reinstating fuel surcharge on international flights from October 1, 2009. The fuel surcharge was dropped earlier this year due to decline in fuel prices below US$60.00 per barrel.

Now, JAL has announced the resumption of fuel surcharge over tickets issued during the October-December period, based on the average US$71.41 per barrel of Singapore kerosene, which will be around 300 yen on a Japan-Korea ticket, and 10,000 yen on a Japan-Brazil ticket per person.
